For 2 1/2 yrs, approximately 250,000 Texan slaves had no idea their freedom had been secured by the government based on a stipulation in the Emancipation Proclamation effective Jan 1st 1863.

Until on June 19th 1865 (JUNETEENTH) when Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in TX, 2 mos after the Civil War ended, and issued General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
